On the example of heroes of novels of Konstantin Fedin “The cities and years” and “Brothers” under a new angle are considered drama turns of destinies of the Petersburg intellectuals necessarily involved in event - psychological whirlpool of fundamental historic breakthrough, from World War I beginning before the end of war Civil. During a narration the Northern capital appears as the smithy of a new public order crushing under, so-called, “former”, suddenly appeared in private with surrounding reality. Attempts of heroes to find the place in a windbreak of events of war and revolution come to an end with full breakdown, or hopeless humility. The author refer to the draws a parallel with the Pushkin masterpiece “Bronze Horseman” bringing to the forefront a problem “the small person”, finds сonсeption proximity to A. Tolstoy’s novel «Purgatory» and dilogies of the best domestic symphonies of those years – the Heel and the Sixth N. Myaskovsky.
