ON THE ORIGIN AND DEVELOPMENT OF ETHNOMUSICOLOGY AS AN ACADEMIC DISCIPLINE IN RUSSIA AT THE BEGINNING OF XX CENTURY

The article is devoted to the establishment and development of national ethnomusicology as an academic subject at the beginning of XX century in connection with the activities of the Moscow collector and researcher of folk songs. It shows the continuity between ethnographers and musicians in the development of a Russian musical folklore education. The author assessed the value of the chairman of the Ethnographic Section of the Society of Natural History, Anthropology and Ethnography V.F. Miller as one of the first initiators of the introduction of ethnomusicology as a subject in the programs of higher education. He discloses the importance of the Musical-ethnographic commission in the preparation of the country’s first training program in ethnomusicology, immediately preceding experience practical teaching folk music. The article presents the analysis of the first national “Course readings of folk music”, which was introduced in the program of the Moscow Synodal School in the 1907–1908 school year. It revealed multiple linkages between the Synodal School and the Moscow Conservatory in the development of music and folklore education. The author gives an estimate of the Synodal School in the formation of the modern image of ethnomusicology as a high school science.
