The article analyzes the basic concepts of the study of post-Soviet political transformations. Identifies two methodological paradigms as the neo-institutional approaches and cultural-historical between which at the present stage being the main scientific discussion. Each of the selected theoretical concepts have different explains about communication patterns and trajectories of the political development of the countries of the former USSR. If the first focuses on the empirical description of the post-Soviet transformation, the second approach is developing its own methodology, the ability to reflect the specific context and cultural specificity of the test cases. It is concluded that although many debatable questions on the causes and factors of diversification regime post-Soviet states is maintained, the existence of different theoretical paradigms is an advantage, creating the conditions for a more objective analysis of the complex process of political development of post-Soviet societies.
