The article is devoted to the perception of jazz as an original musical art form in Russia of the 1920s. Penetration of jazz in the space of national culture is largely explained by its hybrid nature - a combination of European and African-American musical elements, as well as stylistic atmosphere, kind of ideological pluralism of the 1920s. Another important factor in the penetration of jazz in Europe was favorable and, moreover, respectful, unlike America’s attitude toward African-American jazz musicians as a herald of the new music. The article describes the main “channels” of penetration of jazz in the space of the national culture of this period: a tour of European jazz bands, the development of the record, radio and cinema. The article focuses on the specifics of jazz of the 1920s - it exists in a space of high culture in an environment of scientific and creative intelligentsia. The first domestic jazzmen (A. Tsfasman, A. Varlamov, G. Terpilovsky, N. Minh, etc.) were musicians with academic musical education, so the first jazz bands called «jazz professors». In conclusion of the article: the domestic jazz of the 1920s was an extraordinary artistic phenomenon.
