The present article is focused upon the issue of evolution and changes in old-believers’ culture and the signs of their presence. The modern approach to studying the old-believers’ tradition, in contrast to that of the XIX-XX century scientists consists in regarding this tradition as a developing cultural system. Saratov regional old-believers’ tradition illustrates the fact that evolution in a canon-oriented culture is not only present, but also has its characteristic features. The author of the research follows the modern methodology of multilinear evolution which is specially effective in studying traditional cultures. The article highlights some specific features of the evolution of the old-believers’ culture, mentioning its main characteristics. 1) The absence of the process of gradual complication and development of a cultural system. The changes happening in the old-believers’ culture can hardy be called innovations; they can be characterized as variation and renewal of the canonical model. 2) The processes of reversibility in the cultural system under discussion are relatively reversible rather than completely reversible. 3) The practice of recreation in this culture is, as a rule, creative and generative. 4) The development of the old-believers’ cultural system is neither uniform, nor simultaneous.
