The article is about changes in the social position of a musician during the age of Enlightenment which resulted in a different understanding of a musician as a personality. The author analyzes the influence of these changes on the music text and its individuality. The example of Mozart’s life (in comparison with Haydn’s) shows the shift from Kapellmeister status to the new social position of free independent artist. The author distinguishes some factors, which led to these changes and determined Mozart’s independence. They are both factors related to Mozart’s personality and those concerning music and social life. This leads to drastic reorientation of music composition from audience as perceiving side (Haydn’s works) to the work of art itself and its individuality (Mozart’s work).
