The author have analyzed reasons and ways of the appeal to a nature theme in one of the most significant movies of the expressionism period called «The Nibelungs» (1924). It was investigated esthetic, historical, symbolical, emotional and stylistic place of nature in this movie. The research showed that the film director Fritz Lang (1890-1976) intentionally distorted a plot of the medieval poem «Nibelungenlied» (The Song of the Nibelungs) on which the scenario is based. He did it to plug the natural sketches, which create «a historical background», characterize the heroes, allocate them against other characters, emphasize their «superhuman» qualities, outline mighty and bright identity, and transfer their experiences. Nature supplements the «sign meanings» of separate scenes, adjusts the viewer on a narration and «memory places», causes concrete feelings. More of it, we can see that nature has a stylistic role in the movie. On the one hand, there is a unification of the individual with nature, and on the other – we see extrapolation of emotions on nature. This fact shows that «The Nibelungs» are on the crossroads of romanticism and expressionism and can`t be unambiguously ranked as one of these directions.
