This article discusses mensural system of musical rhythm – a form of metric organization, which operated in Western polyphonic music from the middle of the XII century to the end of the XVI century. The upper and lower historical boundaries of mensural music (so was called the area of professional musical creativity obeying the laws of mensural system) are denoted, fundamental, specific features, immanent for mensural system, are outputted. Widening and deepening of scientific ideas about mensural music at the present stage (this article summarizes also the results of author’s studies) allowed to make adjustments in the existing historical typologies of forms of Western European musical meter, offered M. G. Kharlap and V. N. Kholopova, the leading national scholars in the field of musical rhythm. The author comes to important conclusions regarding the typological properties of two major meter’s subsystems in the history of mensural music: modal rhythmic system of the second half XII – XIII centuries and (strictly speaking) mensural rhythmic system of the XIV – XVI centuries.
