Рассмотрены концепции двух авторов, в которых делается акцент на роли интеллектуалов в политической жизни. Интеллектуалы представлены в качестве одного из сегментов элиты, со своими особенностями и профессиональными чертами. Сделан исторический экскурс в вопросе о происхождении этой группы, указаны основные ее роли на различных этапах развития современного общества, начиная с Нового времени. Показано стабилизирующее и дестабилизирующе влияние интеллектуалов на политическую систему. Приведены основные научные результаты Шумпетера и Михельса в области изучения этого влияния. Аргументированы факторы, вызывающие стабилизирующее и дестабилизирующее влияние интеллектуалов на политическую систему. Указано на сходство позиций Михельса и Шумпетера в данном вопросе. Перечислены основные методологические принципы, предложенные Михельсом и Шумпетером, доказано, что они актуальны и в наше время. Рассмотрена возможность применения научных достижений классиков в современных условиях. Деятельность интеллектуалов в политике показана во взаимосвязи с другими элитными группами, а также во взаимосвязи с массами. Указано, работы каких современных ученых помогают применять и творчески переосмысливать достижения ученых начала и середины ХХ века – Шумпетера и Михельса.
